This was the expression chosen by the Wine Advocate in its 171st issue, to praise the wines of Cousiño-Macul.
It is a huge honor for us to receive such a heartfelt endorsement from Robert Parker’s prestigious publication. It also encourages us to continue in our efforts to improve the quality of our wines.
We feel especially proud of the 93 points received by our first vintage of Lota, as well as for the other good scores. Our classic wines, the Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon and Antiguas Reservas Chardonnay, both scored 90 points, which is also a great recognition to the quality of these wines.
“Cousiño-Macul seems to have mastered the production of value-priced Chardonnay (…) It is a great value in well-made Chardonnay competing with wines twice the price”; “With very good depth and a long finish, this superb value should evolve for several more years but is hard to resist now”, referring to the Antiguas Reservas Cabernet 2005; “The 2004 Lota is Cousiño-Macul’s new entry into the high-end sweepstakes. If this first vintage is any indicator, the winery is off to a great start”, were some statements about our wines.
“We are really pleased with this evaluation. The results are a reward for our effort, dedication and all the quality investments Cousiño-Macul has done in the past few years”, said Matías Rivera, the Chief Winemaker.

"Cousiño Macul Lota 2004: 93 points
The 2004 Lota is Cousino-Macul’s new entry into the high-end sweepstakes. If this first vintage is any indicator, the winery is off to a great start. This vintage is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot from two vineyard sources. It spent 13 months in new French oak and was bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it has a splendid perfume of pain grille, graphite, black currants, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a layered, full-bodied wine with gobs of spicy, plummy black fruits, ripe tannins, and excellent delineation. It has 8-10 years of cellaring potential and should drink well through 2030. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Macul Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon 2005: 90 points
The deeply colored 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Antiguas Reserva offers toast, spice box, cedar, and black currant scents. This is followed by a spicy, ripe, firm wine with layers of flavor. With very good depth and a long finish, this superb value should evolve for several more years but is hard to resist now. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Macul Antiguas Reservas Chardonnay 2006: 90 points
Many Chilean wineries have difficulty with Chardonnay due to problems integrating oak and fruit components. Cousino Macul seems to have mastered the production of value-priced Chardonnay. The outstanding 2006 Chardonnay Antiguas Reserva has no such problem. Featuring toasty pear, apple, and tropical fruit aromas and flavors, it has excellent depth and concentration, superior balance, and a lengthy, pure finish. It is a great value in well-made Chardonnay competing with wines twice the price. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Macul Finis Terrae 2004: 88 points
The 2004 Finis Terrae is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. and spent 15 months in 75% new small French oak barrels. Purple-colored, it has an attractive bouquet of pain grille, spice box, cassis, and black cherry. On the palate the wine is a bit firm with some hard tannin in the finish. Several years in the bottle may round this wine out at which point my score will appear conservative. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Macul Cabernet Sauvignon 2006: 87 points
The 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits red and black currant aromas and flavors with more depth and ripe fruit than the Merlot. This medium-bodied wine has very good length and should drink well for 2-3 years. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Riesling 2006: 87 points
The 2006 Riesling offers an expressive perfume of slate, petrol, and acacia. It is just off-dry with crisp acidity, intense flavors, and a lengthy, clean finish. It is an excellent value that should be drunk over the next 1-2 years. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Sauvignon Gris 2006: 87 points
Cousino Macul was one of the first wineries from Chile to make an impression on the USA market in the mid-1980s. The winery continues to make wines offering superior bang-for-the-buck. Among the white wines, the 2006 Sauvignon Gris delivers attractive aromas of mineral, fresh herbs, and lemon-lime. This is followed by a well-balanced wine with ample ripe fruit and very good concentration. Drink this excellent value over the next 12-18 months. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.

The 2006 Chardonnay offers aromas and flavors of pear and apple with tropical notes in the background. This nicely balanced wine could use a bit more weight on the mid-palate. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.
Cousiño Macul Merlot 2006: 85 points
The 2006 Merlot emits an excellent nose of red currant and raspberry. This is followed by a fruity wine with plenty of flavor balanced by light tannins. It is a very good value. Drink it over the next 1-2 years. Kudos to Cousino-Macul for this significant upgrade to their portfolio.”
